BOARD DEVELOPMENT

A nonprofit board of directors can set the tone for your entire organization. Truly effective nonprofit boards are dedicated to the organization’s mission and vision, invested in the organization’s success, focused on the governance practices of the organization, and actively engaged in the organization’s outreach, planning, and sustainability. In contrast, an ineffective board can greatly hinder the success of the organization.

"While each client is unique, flaws among nonprofit boards are more common than you might think."

While each client is unique, flaws among nonprofit boards are more common than you might think. Does your board truly understand your organization’s mission and purpose? Do your board members each fully understand their legal and fiduciary responsibilities? Are they actively engaged in your organization’s strategic planning? Are they supporting the efforts of your staff or are they micromanaging? Are they raising money? Are they engaged in outreach for the organization? Not all board members can or should do all tasks - are the unique strengths of each board member being recognized and utilized?

We can guide you through the process of creating an effective board of directors or strengthening the performance of your existing board. Whether through a customized workshop or retreat, a series of sessions, or a combination of both, Intracoastal will get to know your organization, identify your particular strengths and weaknesses, and then guide your board through the process of becoming highly effective.

We will help your board realize their best potential by helping them determine or embrace the organization’s mission, purpose, and values; oversee and support the chief executive; enhance the organization’s public profile; expand the board to bring in new resources; understand board member roles and responsibilities; assess board performance; develop and effectively manage the organization’s resources; raise funds; and plan for the organization’s long term success.
